At this point the user is better off hosting a true scalable cluster with the likes of aws or azure. If you are a data hoarder and need 40+ drives this cloud solution presented nor a NAS is appropriate. By scaleable I mean add another drive if one fills up and you’re good to go. I mean my answer was in relation to the question which was for light usage. Not to mention the number of single points of failure.Įven at normal levels, a LSI2008 can address 256 drives which is literally a full 42U of SC846s with 240 drives. You can theoretically go higher if you want to do some tinkering but it gets kinda weird from there. Stuff 7 of them into a board and you can address 7168 drives. If you want *true* scalability, there's a couple of HBAs that can address 1024 drives per card. Plus the $8000 price tag is pretty ridiculous. While I'm no Synology expert, as far as I can tell the RS4021xs+ can support up to 40 drives which is pretty scalable for normal people but not for anyone that's even remotely considered a data hoarder.
